Job hunting using Social Media

31 05 2009

Looks like I am not the only one looking at alternative methods of finding a job. After much research, I found many blogs and articles describing how to best use social media to maximize your exposure  across a variety of  social networking sites, and establishing useful contacts. I even found a ‘How to get a job using Twitter’  how-to on Mashable with several stories of success in the comments section.  I wonder how long it will take for this job-searching methodology to trickle down to other non-technlogical  industries, if it does at all?

Looking for work, with a twist..

25 05 2009

Since my arrival back in Melbourne, I have been looking for work, without much success. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there in much the same situation as me. Luckily I was put in contact with a recruitment expert called Phil Webster at Align Recruitment who very kindly offered me a great deal of very good advice. He told me that most employment in some select industries (IT in my case) works on a referral basis, often bypassing the advertising of the role altogether, which explains why proportionately few IT jobs are advertised, compared to other skill areas. This might not be news to some, but I find it an interesting trend that correlates with the increased usage of social networking tools in high-tech business circles such as Linked In and Twitter. Just goes to prove that it is in fact more about who you know, than what you know. On this basis, I am going to modify my strategy and hopefully, land myself a job! Watch this space.
