I have been wrapping up a few loose ends with my current freelance projects. I had the pleasure of launching ASAPersonnel last week, my client has since begun using the CMS capabilites of the site, as well as embracing the largely automated Social Media marketing strategy that was created using TwitterFeed and Twitter.

I will be wrapping up another project at the close of this week, details to be announced.

Pipeline: A few things therein

22 07 2009

Hello, sorry to not have been more active in the past few weeks, but I have been working on several things simultanously and have found it difficult to find time and post an update.

I am excited to announce that in the coming week I will be finalising and launching one of the websites I have built for one of my customers. He is happy with the work I have done, and I am happy that it suits his up-and-coming business’s needs for the foreseeable future.  Watch this space for more information.

I have also been been dedicating some of my spare time to personal projects I can use to bulk up my portfolio. I have come to the conclusion that I would very much like to pursue my interests in the current wave of user-experience/user interface design interlaced with various aspects of rich media (audio, video and imagery). The future of these my interestes in this sphere of technologies opens up a whole realm of possibilities, particularly with the current technological trends pointing towards more natural interactions with machines,  as demonstrated by the iPhone and the Nintendo Wii. The future of these technologies? Well, lets just say that in the future i’d like to work on a brain/reality interface. For these reasons, I have been trying to capitalize on my interests by spending time on the following projects;

– Compiling/Mixing/Mastering a mix of my favourite electronic music.  I rarely mention to anyone in fact that I am an avid fan of eletronic music and techno, and have moonlighted as a DJ in the past because more often than not, it is misinterpreted. Since I have realised that what people think of me is not important, but rather my actions that count,  I have decided to compile this mix and feature it as a part of my portfolio.  Since I am 12,000 miles away from my mixer and turntables, I am going to pursue this venture using software production software (Ableton Live amongst others) . This project is something I have had planned in my head for many years, and am still sorting through 100+ tracks on the shortlist. Watch this space.

– New website/blog/portfolio. I am fond of this WordPress blog, but I feel I have outgrown it now, and feel that by showcasing my own design, it will give prospective employers a good idea of what I am capable of. I am in the process of designing and a new blog/portfolio from scratch. I am enjoying learning about different styles of design. I am particularly fond of the use of minimalism combined with strong iconography and clean typography to achieve strong visual impact.  I still plan to base it around the WordPress CMS, because I admire it’s simplicity and ease of use compared to other CMS systems.  This project is also proving to take more time than previously thought, due to the fact that I am my own worst customer. I change my mind every 5 minutes, and I find myself being too much of a perfectionist. I hope to finish it soon. In the meantime, I am enjoying sharing and discussing all things web related with my contacts on Twitter.

Following on…

I saw this and thought it was quite funny

:

I wonder how many news stories will percolate into the mainstream in the following weeks about Facebooks vanity URL’s . I got mine without much hassle:  http://www.facebook.com/dnfisher.  A friend of mine (who shall remain nameless for fear of ridicule 😉 ) actually got up at 5am to get his. …

A BIG no-no

11 06 2009

In the past 9 months or so, I have become increasingly tired of Facebook.  Ever since they did their first ‘facelift’ and opened up the API for outside apps, it has become slow, bloated and essentially reaching what can only be described by human metaphor as the ‘mid life crisis’ years of a social networking site. Yet I still use it, and it is mostly out of necessity because either I don’t have people’s emails or phone numbers. Its a bit like using the crappy tin can opener that is always a mission to operate.

Now as if the incessant ‘What type of (fart/dwarf/etc) are you’ quizzez, the mandatory 6 month facelift where they re-arrange everything, and that guy who you met for 5 minutes who is in fact a total spammer inviting you to anything and everything  wasn’t enough of an issue, they come along with their targeted advertising.  I have no problems with Facebook trying to make a bit of money out of advertising. Why the hell not?  However, the targeting of which they speak is anything but. It seems as if they have a set of 10 all – encompassing  keywords which they harvest from different parts of your profile (whoa! you’re SINGLE?? you MUST wanna meet HOT guys/girls in YOUR area)  and then seemingly bombard you with the ugliest, most irrelevant adverts ever.  But if I was the person  in charge of the advertising department at Facebook, and someone came along and proposed to use the below advert to promote a ‘workout technique’ they would get a metaphorical punch to the temple.

workout

Not only is the advert ugly, irrelevant and of low quality, it also waters down the look and feel of the rest of the site. Why advertise for six packs and not include a picture of some rippling six packs? It also appears that the person who made it didn’t think twice before using a photograph of Edward Norton (From the flm ‘American History X’)  with a big nazi swastika tattooed on his chest. Did they forget the connotations of the film? Maybe their workout technique involves committing some race crime and getting buff by beating off your would-be attackers in prison. Maybe they just figured no one would recognise the image.  Have these people forgotten how to use their brains? I wouldn’t want them operating anywhere near my business.

Maybe I am ranting. But it is this lazy attitude, and lack of attention to detail which in my eyes has made the overall user experience of Facebook much less satisfying since it took steps to diversify itself and make itself appeal to a much wider market. To continue using my previous analogy, Facebook has lost its youthful sex appeal and is now slapping on the makeup (vanity URLs)  in order to keep up with the other ugly bloated ladies (MySpace) and the younger, edgier contenders in social media (Twitter).

Job hunting using Social Media

31 05 2009

Looks like I am not the only one looking at alternative methods of finding a job. After much research, I found many blogs and articles describing how to best use social media to maximize your exposure  across a variety of  social networking sites, and establishing useful contacts. I even found a ‘How to get a job using Twitter’  how-to on Mashable with several stories of success in the comments section.  I wonder how long it will take for this job-searching methodology to trickle down to other non-technlogical  industries, if it does at all?

Looking for work, with a twist..

25 05 2009

Since my arrival back in Melbourne, I have been looking for work, without much success. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there in much the same situation as me. Luckily I was put in contact with a recruitment expert called Phil Webster at Align Recruitment who very kindly offered me a great deal of very good advice. He told me that most employment in some select industries (IT in my case) works on a referral basis, often bypassing the advertising of the role altogether, which explains why proportionately few IT jobs are advertised, compared to other skill areas. This might not be news to some, but I find it an interesting trend that correlates with the increased usage of social networking tools in high-tech business circles such as Linked In and Twitter. Just goes to prove that it is in fact more about who you know, than what you know. On this basis, I am going to modify my strategy and hopefully, land myself a job! Watch this space.
