Pipeline: A few things therein

22 07 2009

Hello, sorry to not have been more active in the past few weeks, but I have been working on several things simultanously and have found it difficult to find time and post an update.

I am excited to announce that in the coming week I will be finalising and launching one of the websites I have built for one of my customers. He is happy with the work I have done, and I am happy that it suits his up-and-coming business’s needs for the foreseeable future.  Watch this space for more information.

I have also been been dedicating some of my spare time to personal projects I can use to bulk up my portfolio. I have come to the conclusion that I would very much like to pursue my interests in the current wave of user-experience/user interface design interlaced with various aspects of rich media (audio, video and imagery). The future of these my interestes in this sphere of technologies opens up a whole realm of possibilities, particularly with the current technological trends pointing towards more natural interactions with machines,  as demonstrated by the iPhone and the Nintendo Wii. The future of these technologies? Well, lets just say that in the future i’d like to work on a brain/reality interface. For these reasons, I have been trying to capitalize on my interests by spending time on the following projects;

– Compiling/Mixing/Mastering a mix of my favourite electronic music.  I rarely mention to anyone in fact that I am an avid fan of eletronic music and techno, and have moonlighted as a DJ in the past because more often than not, it is misinterpreted. Since I have realised that what people think of me is not important, but rather my actions that count,  I have decided to compile this mix and feature it as a part of my portfolio.  Since I am 12,000 miles away from my mixer and turntables, I am going to pursue this venture using software production software (Ableton Live amongst others) . This project is something I have had planned in my head for many years, and am still sorting through 100+ tracks on the shortlist. Watch this space.

– New website/blog/portfolio. I am fond of this WordPress blog, but I feel I have outgrown it now, and feel that by showcasing my own design, it will give prospective employers a good idea of what I am capable of. I am in the process of designing and a new blog/portfolio from scratch. I am enjoying learning about different styles of design. I am particularly fond of the use of minimalism combined with strong iconography and clean typography to achieve strong visual impact.  I still plan to base it around the WordPress CMS, because I admire it’s simplicity and ease of use compared to other CMS systems.  This project is also proving to take more time than previously thought, due to the fact that I am my own worst customer. I change my mind every 5 minutes, and I find myself being too much of a perfectionist. I hope to finish it soon. In the meantime, I am enjoying sharing and discussing all things web related with my contacts on Twitter.

This is my friend Vivo’s new Urban Exploration website. He shall remain known only as Vivo because of the delicate nature of the way he gains access to the places where he takes these stunning photographs. I thought I would link to his site, as he will be populating it with photographs of his future and (numerous) past adventures. Vivo has a keen eye for photography, and I like his style because he pays attention to the detail found in urban landscapes as well as his excellent use of light and texture.

Machines etc

I have a mild obsession with robots.  I am a big fan of anything robot or AI related. I am a total sucker for science fiction books, films and even music with science-fiction sampling. I found this clip on youtube a while ago, but never got round to putting it up on here. It is the final scene from Daft Punk’s film ‘Electroma‘. The story is about two androids trying to become human, and after encountering too much adversity in their quest, commit suicide. I find this clip visually stunning, although I do apologise for the naff timer at the top, I couldn’t find a better clip. The film itself is also interesting in so far that it features none of their own musical work, but that of a variety of other artists.  The soundtrack is nonetheless very good.

Music is: Jackson C. Frank – I want to be alone

Goodbye Gatton!

Gatton in the Twilight, originally uploaded by a3396717.

I took this the afternoon prior to us leaving Gatton. I really enjoyed my time in Gatton doing farmwork. At first is was hard, but after a while it was OK. Our coworkers were friendly and genuine. It’s something I believe very few people of my generation will ever get to experience.

The world has changed so much in the past 50 years, and living a simple life, working outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine looking after the land, and reaping what you sow (pardon the cliche!) is a very rewarding experience. Best of all, your work stays at work, and your time at home is your own. No pressure from deadlines or stresses about climbing the ladder. I guess its certainly a good way to lead your life. However, our feet were getting itchy, and we knew it was time for a change.
